Pipe Trades Joint Apprentice and Journeyman Training Committee, for Southern Nevada sponsored by the United Association of Journeymen Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada Local Union # 525, and the Mechanical Contractors Association, offers a limited number of apprenticeships every year.

An apprenticeship consists of five years, 246 hours a year, of extensive classroom and shop training and a minimum of 8,500 hours of on the job training. During these five years of training the apprentice receives instruction in:

Mathematics
Science
Rigging
Water Supply
Drainage
Plumbing Fixtures
Gas Installations
Drawing and Blueprint Reading
Soldering and Brazing
Welding and Oxy-Acetylene Cutting
Pipe Welding Layout
Refrigeration
Automatic Controls
Heating Venting Air Conditioning
Uniform Plumbing Code
Medical Gas Installations

Instructors for this program are experienced and highly trained journeymen who receive comprehensive instructor training every year at the United Association Instructor Training Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Apprentices indentured under this program will work under the supervision of an experienced journeyman at all times. The apprentice will be required to do all types of physical labor which will include heavy lifting, and will be required to work under all types of conditions that will include severe hot and cold temperatures, heights, and confined spaces.

Apprentices will measure, cut, plumb, level, prepare, fit up and install piping, hangers, fixtures, all types of equipment, and weld, solder, braze all types of pipe, fittings, valves, and appurtenances.

Wages for an apprentice begins at 45% per hour and also includes the following benefits:

Training Fund

Pay increases of 5% of Journeyman's rate occur every six months until the Journeyman's rate is reached.

Applicants must meet the following requirements

  1. Minimum age limit - 18 years, no maximum age limit

  2. Possess a High School Diploma or D.E.D.

  3. Provide copies of the following documents upon submitting your application:
    a) Birth Certificate
    b) High School Diploma or G.E.D.
    c) Legible High School Transcripts
    D) Transcripts of Trade School, College, etc.
    E) Military Release Papers DD-214 (if applicable)

  4. Take an basic Mathematics exam

  5. Appear before the J.A.T.C. for an oral interview

Note: Applicants are subject to a substance abuse test after the selection process and before admittance into the program.

Pipe Trades Joint Apprentice and Journeyman Training Committee Program is also accredited with the Community College of Southern Nevada, earning it's apprentices 4 credit hours per semester towards an Associate of Applied Science, Pipe Trades Degree.
